Stellarium is a free planetarium for your computer. It shows a realistic sky in 3D, just like what you see with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope. With the star number (HIP number) on your certificate, you can find your star immediately and see exactly where your star is in the sky on the map.
You can print the map from the software and use it to go into your garden and find your star easily.
What does it mean to register a star?
When you register a star, any real celestial star that was previously designated with a catalog number is given a name of your choosing. This can be a real name or a nickname. A star registry is of purely symbolic significance and doesn’t give you any rights to stars or celestial objects.

What kind of software is this?
The software is an open source desktop planetarium for Linux/Unix, Windows and macOS. It renders the skies in realtime using OpenGL, which means the skies will look exactly like what you see with your eyes, binoculars, or a small telescope. Just put in your city or coordinates. It is very simple to use, which is one of its biggest advantages: it can easily be used by beginners.
How do I find my star?
With the included (downloadable) software, you can quickly and easily find your star. Simply enter the scientific name that’s on your registry certificate, and it will be displayed. You can then print out the star map and go outside to find it in the sky.
Does every star have a name?
Every star should be precisely identifiable on a scientific basis. However, most of the countless stars out there don’t have a name and are recorded with the aid of catalog numbers. These stars are listed in different star catalogs. Only very few stars have a name.
Can I name a specific star?
If everyone wanted to choose their own star, things would quickly get messy. You would have to download the software, choose a star, and then give its name to us. If that particular star had already been assigned a name, you’d have to search again… we’re sure you can imagine that we would never be able to guarantee your unique choice of star, even if that were feasible for us, given the hundreds of orders we get.
